PureGusto on Coffee and Longevity

Welcome to the PureGusto blog. Read on to find out more.

In a study of around half-a-million British adults, coffee drinkers were found to have a slightly lower risk of death over a 10-year follow-up period than non-coffee drinkers. The apparent longevity boost comes as yet another piece of good news for coffee lovers, with health benefits recorded in drinkers of the instant, ground and decaffeinated coffee.

Let’s take a look at the data. [In 2014], a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies looking at long-term consumption of coffee and the risk of cardiovascular disease were published. The researchers found 36 studies involving more than 1,270,000 participants. The combined data showed that those who consumed a moderate amount of coffee, about three to five cups a day, were at the lowest risk for problems. Those who consumed five or more cups a day had no higher risk than those who consumed none. Many studies suggest that caffeine can help prevent several chronic conditions, including:

Type 2 diabetes. A 2014 study published in Diabetologia found that people who increased their coffee consumption daily by more than one cup over the course of four years had an 11 percent lower risk for type 2 diabetes than those who didn’t increase their coffee intake.

Parkinson's disease. Studies in animal models suggest that caffeine may prevent the loss of nerve cells that produce dopamine, a low level of which is believed to be the cause of Parkinson’s disease. Although research continues, some studies in men have found that men who drink more coffee or other caffeinated beverages are less likely to develop Parkinson's disease. It’s less clear for women, but one study published in the journal Movement Disorders in 2012 found that the protective effect of caffeine may not extend to women who are taking hormone replacement therapy.

Alzheimer's disease. A 2014 study published in Nature Neuroscience found that caffeine has a positive effect on long-term memory. The research showed that caffeine enhances certain memories for at least 24 hours after consumption. Caffeine may also reduce swelling in the brain, and research involving mice shows caffeine decreases the level of a type of protein that builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.

Cancer. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, there is evidence that regular consumption of coffee does not increase the risk of cancer. In fact, regular coffee drinking may lower the risk for some types of cancer, such as colon cancer and liver cancer.

Heart disease. Studies investigating the association between caffeine, coffee, and heart disease have produced conflicting results, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). But although it’s clear that caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, releases free fatty acids from fatty tissue, and increases urination, it remains unclear if it helps protect your heart. The AHA notes, however, that having up to two cups of coffee daily doesn’t appear to be harmful.

Caffeine in Perspective. If you are thinking of pouring yourself an extra cup of coffee for longevity’s sake, remember: The health benefits only outweigh the health risks if you drink coffee in moderation – about three cups a day. Drinking too much coffee can cause side effects!
